Hacking Cooper Union
September 2024
During college, I was able to directly access and scrape my school's "secure" alumni database.
After gaining access, I data mined all alumni metadata and enriched these records with linkedins, emails, githubs, social media contacts, and friends of friends. I then solicited and sold these alumni records to fellow students so that they could reach out to alumni for summer internships/full-time offers.
I used my college's email system to mass solicit my product, sending several thousand automated emails over the course of a couple of days. Hundreds of students signed up and payed for my service. And many received quality internships/jobs for that upcoming summer.
Eventually when Cooper Union administration found out, they sent me a cease and desist letter. And after a series of disciplinary meetings with the Deans, they then threatened to suspend me, when I wouldn't stop, they threatned to expel. So I did stop, because the free tuition weighed more than my pride.
